Just As I Thought

Don’t they have something better to do?

It seems like the most successful weapon in the Republican arsenal is the old name-change wizardry. We here in Arlington, Virginia are the recipients of this trick, not once but twice with the renaming of Washington National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (now THAT’s a mouthful…). Then they forced a name change on our subway station – once simply “National Airport,” it’s been changed to… that’s right, “Reagan National Airport,” which meant that EVERY sign in the entire subway system had to be changed.
Now, Republican lawmakers with too much time on their hands have told the House cafeteria to – are you ready for this – change “french fries” and “french toast” to “freedom fries” and “freedom toast.” From CNN:

“This action today is a small, but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France,” said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, the chairman of the Committee on House Administration.

Ney, whose committee has authority over the House cafeterias, directed the change, after colleague Walter Jones, R-North Carolina, circulated a letter suggesting such a move. Jones said he was following the example of a local restaurant owner in his North Carolina district.

“I represent a district with multiple military bases that have deployed thousands of troops,” Jones said in a statement. “As I’ve watched these men and women wave good-bye to their loved ones, I am reminded of the deep love they have for the freedom of this nation and their desire to fight for the freedom of those who are oppressed overseas. Watching France’s self -serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say.”
Well, THAT will show those cheese-eating wine-drinking inspector-encouraging beret-wearing Frenchies. I guess these right-wing time-wasters who complain that school kids don’t know enough history are unaware that if it weren’t for France, there would be no United States of America. And to the French, I say… vice versa.

“A small, but symbolic waste of time and money” would’ve been more appropriate, I beleive.
