Just As I Thought

What’s up, doc?

I’m watching a Doris Day movie that’s been on TiVo for a week or so, waiting patiently: “My Dream is Yours,” from 1949.
It’s about a New York girl who goes to L.A. hoping to become a successful radio star. It’s got some great music, great singing, and great acting by the incomparable Eve Arden — love her! The sponsor, Mr. Hofer, is a comic triumph.
So, all is going along well until about an hour and 20 minutes in, where there’s a sudden switch of gears, and an odd cartoon sequence starring Bugs Bunny pops up.

Suddenly, Doris’s heart is torn between her agent and the wolfish alcoholic singer that used to headline her new radio show… a guy that she rebuffed over and over, but now suddenly has feelings for. He’s slimy, obnoxious, and just plain mean. Her character must have undergone an incredible transformation very quickly to even think of him.
I just don’t understand. Did I miss something? It was a great movie up until that point.
