Just As I Thought

Fonted History

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I had a brief dalliance with creating fonts, and had some success… well, not financially or anything, but I did get noticed. I was even included in the Mac Shareware 500 book for three of my fonts: “Generations,” based on the typeface used in the Star Trek: The Next Generation titles; “Cable Dingbats,” a font consisting of network TV logos; and “Groening,” a font based on the handwriting of Matt Groening, creator of “Life in Hell” and “The Simpsons.”
I still see my typefaces here and there, I can tell they’re mine because of certain design flaws in them. My “Generations” font appears all over the place — people who’d rather not pay for the real professional version tend to download mine free.
And just today, I saw my “Groening” font on Boing Boing, decorating a fez from the Apple OpenDoc group.
History comes back to haunt us in the strangest ways.

Do you think I should dig out those fonts and post them here?

Do you ever feel bad for Carol Twombly (sp?), the woman who worked at Adobe years ago and created Lithos, Trajan and Charlemagne? For years Lithos was all over the place, including credits for MTV, and now Trajan is everywhere, especially in movie titles. I remember first recognizing it as the face used for the Stargate movie.

But of course she got nothing for it.
