Just As I Thought

Here we are, eight days away from the big Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld. For the record, I feel sort of disappointed in myself for not going to MacWorld, this will be the second one since I moved to California and I am too lazy to go. Ah, well. There’s always next year, right?
Anyway. What magical gadgets will Steve pull from his jeans? (Oy, what a visual…) A new video iPod? A phone? A 42″ plasma display? Those are some big pockets he’s got.
I think it is interesting how quiet the pundits and rumormongers have become. For the last six months or so, there has been an “iPhone” frenzy as everyone upped their page hits by posting speculation about an Apple-branded mobile phone. I’ve tried, in my own limited way, to be skeptical and logical about it all. People are making wild leaps in logic and assuming that this product is real despite any evidence to the contrary — you know, the faith-based product. In fact, Steve Jobs himself said — a year or so ago? — that Apple was not releasing a phone. Still, he’s made denials before. One has to wonder about their lack of denial lately. All the speculation about a phone has done wild things to Apple stock, especially after mainstream tech pundits and columnists began to speculate. One would think that if Apple was not developing a phone, they’d come out and say so to calm the stock volatility.
In the scheme of things, Apple product introductions are hardly history-changing events that rock the world; no Apple product is likely to stop a war or save lives or feed the hungry. Still, it does provide a little entertainment. So, what do you think Apple will have to say next week?
