Just As I Thought

Lighten up, Apple

Dear Apple: I know that you like to, well, Think Different, and Leopard is no exception. But sometimes, the obvious is the way to go.

Dear Apple,

I know that you like to, well, Think Different, and Leopard is no exception. But sometimes, the obvious is the way to go.

For example: you differentiate the active window by first adding a substantially larger drop shadow behind it, and then lightening all the inactive windows behind it. The result? A bunch of light windows and one window that is very dark. Wouldn’t the better choice have been to darken all the inactive windows and making the frontmost one lighter? Add to this the darkened and semi-translucent menubar, and the upshot is that Leopard is a dark, dark, dark operating system. Everything is dark gray and foreboding, and frankly it is somewhat depressing to work with.

Big hugs,

Gene

P.S. The edges of the screen are sharply squared off now, as are windows. I miss the old days when windows, the desktop, and menubar had rounded edges, it made it all… friendlier. That said, why would you square everything off and then, out of the blue, round the corners of menus that were once squared? What research told you to do this? It’s just bizarre.

p.p.s. It’s not all bad — I thank you for the attention to detail in the previewing of files. Not only to HTML files show a preview of their formatted content, but even font files present a preview of the font contained within. Gorgeous!
