Just As I Thought

When the power goes out, so does the brain

A couple of hours ago, there was a very loud explosion and the power went out. (It just came back.) Naturally, I jumped nearly out of my skin – I don’t think it has anything to do with living so close to major terrorist targets as it does with being startled by loud, unexpected noises.
Anyway. Here’s a curious fact to ponder now that the power is on: I was typing away here on my Powerbook, and was puzzled that it wasn’t interrupted. It took a second or two to realize that it uses a battery, even when plugged in.
Then, I closed the lid. The power was off and I had a battery-operated computer, but I didn’t use it while the power was out… for fear of running down the battery.
What a strange reaction – the one instance when the Powerbook would be very useful, and I reacted as if one must sit quietly in the dark when the power is out. Weird.
