Just As I Thought

Just this once, everybody lives

There was once a time when one’s heart would stop upon hearing the casualty count after an air disaster. One would read or watch coverage of the accident and wait in fear for the death count.
While watching coverage of today’s air crash in Toronto, I realized that I was expecting a high death toll, and wasn’t at all anxious about it. Perhaps the constant death toll from around the world — war, tsunami, earthquake, and monsoon floods — had inured me.
And then CNN announced that the unconfirmed death toll was… zero. Zero. The reports are that everyone survived.
And my heart stopped at that news.
