Just As I Thought

If I had a million dollars

I once played the lottery when it was up to $220 million – like a lot of other people. I have since spent a lot of time trying to decide what I would do with the money (even though I never play the lottery, which makes the odds even more remote). So, tell me – what would you do with $220 million?

The selfish stuff first. I’d build a really cool house. A craftsman style bungalow with every experimental energy-saving device I could find. Solar panels, passive heating, etc. etc. Just to show that you can live like a king without sucking down all the resources on the planet. And it would have a hedge maze in the backyard.
Speaking of houses, I would them buy up the largest plot of land I could find around my house, and build many houses on it. And I would set up a foundation that would find jobs for the homeless and then sell them those houses – it’s my firm belief that the housing market is so ridiculous: I would sell the houses for what they actually cost to build, not for a perceptual price based upon their location, amenities, neighborhood, etc. I’ll bet I could sell the houses for something around $10,000. (Maybe I’m being naive, but hey, it’s my fantasy.) I would live there myself – why would I want to live in some segregated community where everyone is the same and everyone has millions of dollars that do no good for the world?

I want to use big chunks of money to further education. I really believe that poverty, crime, intolerance, etc., are just symptoms of a bigger problem; a problem solvable by great education. Being uneducated means you are unemployable; which leads to despair and poverty, which leads to crime and worse.
I want to find ways to use the money that would fund something perpetual and help bring people out of despair. I want people to feel that their lives are worthwhile and that they are contributing to the world – and the world appreciates them.
I think tomorrow I’ll go buy another lottery ticket.
