The Vast Car Conspiracy: GM’s Destruction of Transit

This is fascinating: evidently the loss of many public transit systems in the American west are due directly or indirectly to a campaign by General Motors, which, through various front companies, purchased controlling interest in the transit companies and carefully destroyed them from within. Another one of those “vast conspiracy” theories that seems to have some weight, and helps explain how the car became the dominant mode of transport so quickly after World War II – even though trolleys and other public transit were so dominant only a few years before.
Read more about it at the Modern Transit Society (thanks, BoingBoing).
