I bought a new stove back at the start of the year, and with it, new pots and pans. They all held warning labels about the danger of non-stick surfaces when heated. They give off fumes that will kill birds. I once went out with a guy who kept a bird named Patrick in his kitchen, and when I told him this, he shrugged it off. It bothered me. Now I find a horrifying description of what happens to pet birds when exposed to these Teflon fumes. Do not read this if you are queasy. If you have a pet bird, get him away from the kitchen.
I’m always horrified by animal suffering, mostly because the animal is almost always blameless. I can watch Trauma in the ER without flinching, but turn on Emergency Vets and I’m crying and upset.
Fark brought this subject up today because a CBC story claims that the EWG (referenced in the link above) is asking for warning labels on Teflon items. But as I noted above, my non-stick cookware and my stove came with these warnings on them. If they’re not required, I’m amazed that both companies took the time to do so.
