I was just watching a show on Travel Channel about — what else — Las Vegas. They just stated that the light on top of the Luxor hotel is one of only two man-made objects visible from space, the other being the Great Wall of China.
Ugh.
Don’t you just love these ridiculous marketing boondoggles?
Not only is it unlikely that the Luxor can be seen from space — that lamp, bright as it is, is still regulated by the FAA to avoid blinding pilots — but the popular myth about the Great Wall has always been just that: a myth.
Yes, the Travel Channel is really nothing more than a 24-hour, 7-day infomercial for Las Vegas these days, but c’mon… you’d think they wouldn’t have to make stuff up.
Totally. I want to like the Travel Channel, but other than “Great Hotels,” their shows (which usually have the words “weird,” “strange,” “haunted,” or “world’s …-est” in the title) don’t have nearly the kind of good practical travel information you usually find on other travel shows on, say, PBS et al.
