Do you remember when we found out that there was a “neo-conservative” cabal that worked behind the scenes to get Bush elected then push him to invade Iraq — all before September 11 came along? That group, known as The Project for the New American Century, bills itself as an “educational organization” and is headed by William Kristol.
This group pushed for war for years, first during the Clinton administration then during the administration of their darling Dubya (who, incidentally, hired at least 10 of the project’s members).
So, what does it say that the leaders of this group are now distancing themselves from Bush and saying things like this?
Robert Kagan and William Kristol, two of the war’s strongest supporters, write in the current issue of the conservative Weekly Standard that “if the administration does not take dramatic action now, it may be unable to avoid failure.” If Kagan and Kristol are that worried, the rest of us should be petrified.
