Last night while out with old pal Julie and her husband Jason, we took cabs to shuttle back and forth to Palo Alto’s hip, happening University Avenue. Both cabs were driven by 50ish victims of the tech boom and bust; one was working on his Powerbook in command line. Both told of their conversion from tech to taxi, instilling a sense of fear in my bones.
Back home, taxis are driven by recent immigrants, people who haven’t necessarily got skills or education. Here, the cabs are driven by highly educated middle class white men who can’t get a programming job or are starting again on a second degree.
This is a little frightening.
