Just As I Thought

The Luck O’ the Irish

Paddy O'Furniture

A few weeks ago I was hoping to get some patio furniture on clearance — because although it’s the height of summer, there seems to be nowhere that sells patio stuff. I ended up finding something close to what I wanted at, of all places, Wal-Mart’s website. (I’m feeling dirty enough for buying something from Wal-Mart, please feel free to excoriate and crucify me but be nice about it.)

It arrived today, and after an hour of unwrapping enough padding and paper to fill my big recycle bin, I finally figured out what pillows went where and settled in to do some work outside in my new “outdoor living room.”

And what do you know? Yes, on July 18, in San Jose, a city that has never in its recorded history had this happen on this day: it started raining.

And more amusing: there was story in the paper this morning about the possibility of rain on this day and how it would be a record. As I sit here in the living room watching the rain come down, I pulled up the newspaper to check the story, and now it says:

Rare summer rain taken out of San Jose forecast
In more than 70 years of record-keeping, it has never rained in San Jose on July 18.
Expect that streak to keep going.
Rain did fall as far south as Mountain View this morning.
San Francisco made weather history today by recording one-hundredth of an inch of rain, the storm system “is weakening rapidly” and will exit in the late morning hours, according to Dan Gudgel, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.
“I think it’s opportunity may have passed,” Gudgel said of San Jose’s chance for rain.
