The conclusion of this article is that Street View ran over the donkey. But in just a few frames I decided they didn’t, despite how odd it looks.
One key fact: In Botswana, they drive on the left. This in reinforced by the fact that another car appears in the sequence, coming in the opposite direction on the right. The camera the newspaper claims is the FRONT is actually the BACK. Given this fact, it looks like the cloud of dust that is seen was caused by the oncoming car, not the Google car. You can see the donkey walking beside the other car when it is in the distance, in the cloud of dust. As you continue toward the donkey, you see that at some point before the Google car reaches it, it has fallen in the road. It also looks like the Google car stopped for the donkey, and that explains how it suddenly appears standing on the side of the road so quickly in the next frame – they waited for it to stand up and wander off. The next frame is a little farther down the road, the donkey has moved. In the final sequence of frames, you can see it has moved off the road and is wandering around in the brush. He starts on his feet and ends on his feet, so all is well. Case closed.
