While waiting for the guys to install my new heating system, I stumbled across the movie Chocolat on one of those movie channels. I was instantly drawn into it, much the same way Lilo and Stitch grabbed me.
At the core of both of these films is the desire of an outsider – someone who is different from everyone else – to find a place to belong. I start to add up the various movies that I enjoy:
- Lilo and Stitch
- Chocolat
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Auntie Mame
- Amelie
- Little Voice
All of these movies dance around the same theme… the person who is not part of mainstream society, someone who is just different enough that they feel as if they are outside looking in. Someone who is lonely and needs someone.
Do you suppose, just maybe, I identify with characters like that? There must be a lot of other people who do as well. These movies were not what you’d call flops, were they?
