Just As I Thought

Katharine Hepburn

It’s so depressing when you have spent the day not being in touch with the news, only to find out in the evening that something like this has happened.
What a grand and classy dame she was. I truly feel that now the golden age of Hollywood has finally come to an end. And I’m afraid that we will never see its like again.

  • I think your point is very good – but I also think that the stars of today live in such a different world that they will never be able to maintain the “mystique” that someone like Katharine Hepburn achieved. The secrets of the old generation of idols were generally that: secret. Today, stars simply can’t keep their personal lives out of the tabloids nor do they ever seem to be discreet and focused on their craft — and rarely are they as unique as Hepburn, being packaged products of an industry that seems more and more to focus on the lowest common denominator. Of course, we the consumers are driving that.
You’re right – there were so many awful, awful films then, too. It will be interesting to see what movies from our generation pass through to the next as classics. And who will be accorded the same respect as Hepburn in another 50 years? My vote: Who else? Mariah Carey!

  • You wont but future generations just might. What I mean by that is Hollywood, like music, always looks better in hindsight. What we tend to forget about the golden age of Hollywood is that in the midst of Casablanca The African Queen Ben Hur et al it that there was also an enormous amount of crap. Along with it was an enormous amount of baggage and closeted secrets of the Tinseltown idols themselves.
I too mourn the passing of my Kate, but one must wonder how the future will look upon Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford and even (dare I say) Russell Crowe.
In short, I dont think that movies, actors or directors were all that much better in past, its just that you see what is widely considered the cream of the crop. Years from now we wont see Dude Wheres my Car but we just might see Moulon Rouge
     now I just feel old.
