He’s done it, just in time to kick off his big re-election road show:
President George W Bush has endorsed a constitutional amendment that would ban marriages of same-sex couples.
“If we are to prevent the meaning of marriage from being changed forever our nation must enact a constitutional amendment to protect marriage in America,” said President Bush.
Part of me is happy about this. There’s no mistaking his agenda now: he’s shown over and over that he doesn’t like our constitution, and now he wants to enshrine discrimination by writing it in. Luckily, the president himself has no power to do that — but it certainly shows where he stands and that he’ll be leaning on his cronies.
[Insert really foul-mouthed profanity about this fascist, donkey-******* idiot here.]
This whole tempest is really pissing me off. The right wing is trying to hedge by saying that states can construct civil unions to provide benefits to couples, but marriage is off-limits.
Well, what in the hell is the difference between a civil union and a marriage if they provide the same benefits… other than the word “marriage?” I’ll tell you what the difference is: religion. In other words, they want to elevate religion by writing a religious tradition into the constitution.
