Why is it that every time a news reader mentions Myanmar, he must include the disclaimer “formerly known as Burma”?
Is that now it’s official name? Myanmar Formerly Known as Burma? Why did they bother changing the name if people must be continually reminded?
You need to remember who renamed it – the rather unpleasant SLORC.
I think you’ll find Aung San Suu Kyi still uses ‘Burma’. Pity the media don’t follow her example and drop ‘Myanmar’ altogether.
The SLORC… sounds like some slimy monster in a Tolkein book. Unpleasant, indeed.
