Just As I Thought

Our open government

I watched the Bush interview on Arabic television yesterday. He didn’t do too badly, but he could have been much better. Of course, he was being interviewed by a channel that is funded by the U.S. government, and was hardly being bombarded with tough questions. It could have been a regular press conference for all the probing, insightful questions being asked. Nevertheless, I think he did an OK job of appearing repulsed by what happened. Unfortunately, it won’t appease those who hate our country regardless of what happens.
One thing, however, continually annoyed and pissed me off as I watched: his constant harping on how America has an open government, a transparent process, blah blah blah. He kept hammering home the point that Saddam was not accountable for his actions, but things were different in America.
This was from the president who is presiding over the most secretive White House in my lifetime, the one that refuses to divulge any information, the one that extended secrecy rules on presidential documents, the one that classifies what kind of snacks other world leaders like
Transparent? If we have such open government, why is it necessary to go to the Supreme Court to get information about who they met with to formulate their energy policy?
