You know me — if there’s some new gadget I must have it immediately.
So, when I learned that Vonage now offers a “soft phone” for Macintosh, I signed right up.
Basically, this is a telephone that uses your computer and a broadband internet connection. The soft phone rings on your computer rather than a standard telephone in your home. I thought, “wow, I could get my telephone calls at work, in a hotel in London, wherever I am.”
Then reality set in: I can do that now through the magic of the mobile telephone, and I don’t need a computer and internet connection for that.
So, that non-refundable $10 setup free was just the price of playing around with a gadget I’ll soon get rid of.
In the fearless spirit of Mac’s previous experiment, I’ll open up the phones for today. Feel free to call me at 1-(703)-842-1396 — assuming my computer is on and I’m logged in!
[This is kind of cool — I haven’t been using the computer much of the evening so I didn’t get any calls, which in and of itself points out the major flaw in a software-based phone, but I did get a few voice mail messages (hi, Kat!). Because the system sends me the voice mail messages as audio files, I could post them up here. So, since I’ll have this little toy for at least a week or so (I’ve already paid for the service) let’s try a different experiment: think of this as your own Audblog and record your own entries, which I’ll post up here. What do you think?]
