Just As I Thought

Schitzos

I don’t understand this one. The Senate voted yesterday to strengthen hate-crimes legislation as a response to attacks on gay people. The vote was 65 to 33, which is impressive.
And get his quote from a Republican, which I wholeheartedly endorse:

“I cannot think of a more decent and Christian thing to do. . . . When people are being stoned in the public square, we ought to come to their rescue,” said Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), who co-sponsored the proposal with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

Now here’s what I don’t understand. Sen. Smith is opposed to same-sex marriage, and followed up that great quote with this bizarre one:

“Before you get to marriage, get over hate,” he said.

In other words, they don’t want gay people dead, they just want them out of sight. They’re voting for hate-crimes legislation in order to make it appear that they are compassionate, when in fact, they will turn around and vote to add a hateful amendment to the constitution that would deny rights to a certain class of Americans.
Sick.
