Just As I Thought

Media literacy in a subtext world

I’ve been enjoying reading the News Hounds site, which is aimed directly at Fox News in particular but also points out the subtle — and overt — ways that all media manipulates public opinion. Here’s an example:

FNC wants to be sure their viewers really get the message thoroughly, even if their audience is zoned out and just staring at the screen.
7/02/04 Hannity&Colmes

Tonight at 9:46 a strange poll, quickly flashed on the screen, concerning patriotism.
“Are you more or less patriotic then the average American?”
Democrats 46%, Republicans 76%

Certainly an idiotic poll but it sure delivers the message.

Every ten minutes throughout the hour this statement floated by on the ticker tape.
“President Bush ordered the flag flown at half-mast after Reagan’s death.”
This isn’t news or a relevant fact but just a way to get Bush, flag and Reagan into one sentence. Your unconscious mind will do the rest. Pretty slick or pretty sick depending on your party affiliation.

  • Wait… so were 76% of republicans more or less patriotic than the average american?

  • To Chris C. – Fox doesn’t go into detail. You’re not supposed to actually think or ask questions. Obviously, the insinuation is that Republicans are more patriotic than Democrats, but, hey, they report, you decide.
