Is it just me, or has a tide turned so slowly that I didn’t notice? It just occurred to me that every day is bringing a headline that is unfavorable to a powerful Republican. It looks like the so-called “liberal media” is finally getting it together. How about this story that just popped up?
DeLay’s Corporate Fundraising Investigated
Money Was Directed to Texas GOP to Help State Redistricting Effort
In May 2001, Enron’s top lobbyists in Washington advised the company chairman that then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) was pressing for a $100,000 contribution to his political action committee, in addition to the $250,000 the company had already pledged to the Republican Party that year.
DeLay requested that the new donation come from “a combination of corporate and personal money from Enron’s executives,” with the understanding that it would be partly spent on “the redistricting effort in Texas,” said the e-mail to Kenneth L. Lay from lobbyists Rick Shapiro and Linda Robertson.
Then, there’s this one about another “investigation”:
Cheney Faces Criminal Indictments; Other Illegal Actions Raise Warning Flags at White House
Vice President Dick Cheney faces criminal indictments for illegal activities while CEO of energy giant Halliburton and also illegally intervened to secure a $7 billion no-bid contract for his former employer after his election to office, an analysis by the White House counsel’s office concludes.
The Vice President is currently under investigation by French authorities for bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets while at Halliburton and also faces a U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission probe of a $180 million “slush fund” that may have been used to pay bribes.
Of course, indictment by the French is only going to embolden the right wingers who seem to think that France is the enemy. I don’t know anything about this “Capitol Hill Blue” website and the provenance of this story — has anyone else heard this story from any “establishment” sources?
The Republicans are now looking for a way to postpone the election in case of a terror attack. Of course Mr Bush doesn’t need an actual attack or evidence, I suspect he’ll find a way to premptively postpone the election on fears of an anti-American election result — say if it looks like Kerry will win. If Bush calls his dictatorship “patriotic” and “American” the huddling masses will support him. Next? a raucus rally on the Capitol mall to the tunes of Lee Greenwood — brownshirts optional.
