Just As I Thought

Timing is everything

I was just reading an article on MSNBC about the Japan earthquake today (or yesterday, Japanese time) and was startled by this “related stories” sidebar:

Anyone reading this page would naturally assume that in the last week there had been 4 earthquakes in California of 6.6 magnitude and one 6.0 in Tokyo.
First, let’s tackle the editing: there were 4 earthquakes in one week in California, but they were not all 6.6. Poor writing there.
Second, this “Related Stories” sidebar is pulling stories from the archive — those stories were from June and July. Without a date next to those stories, one would come to the conclusion that the world is in the midst of an unprecedented swarm of large earthquakes.
I dunno. Maybe I should be looking for an editing job instead of a design job…
