ExxonMobil today announced a new record profit: for the last quarter year — that’s three months — they made a profit of $9,920,000,000. Yes, that’s right: 9.92 billion dollars.
They actually said that the high oil and natural gas prices helped them reach this record profit, which is largest quarterly profit for a US company in history.
Now, think about that a moment.
Sky high prices for oil and gas at the pump does not mean that it costs the oil company that much. How do we, as customers, reconcile the astronomical and disgusting profits the oil companies are making with the prohibitively expensive price that we pay? We are being gouged, people. And on top of this, the reprehensible “energy” bill from Dick Cheney’s taskforce contains huge tax subsidies and breaks to these very same oil companies. They’re making unimaginable profits from selling highly overpriced fuel to you and me; then they’re gouging us again when we pay our taxes, the taxes that then go right into their pockets.
Aren’t you tired of making oil companies rich? Of having oil company executives running the White House? Don’t you ever have a flash of inspiration telling you that the two might be connected somehow? I mean, really?
