When the first GEICO commercial with the gecko aired years ago, it was voiced by Kelsey Grammer. It’s been through several voices since then. At first, they tried to imitate Grammer’s voice, but over the years, it’s mutated so much that now I’m puzzled to hear a British, cockney-esque accent from the gecko.
How did this happen?
They had to let go of Kelsey Grammer because… Hey! He wanted real money.
The sound alike had to go because Kelsey is now a very rich man with many lawyers. And no doubt was able to prove his voice was distinctive and any attempt to have an actor ‘sound’ like him was designed to confuse people into thinking Kelsey was still working for and pushing GEICO. He would be on solid ground and wouldn’t be the first to make that claim.
Bette Midler sued and won! When some company hired a singer to sound like her. (they hired one of Bette’s backup singers) Bette said she had no anger for her singer who was just trying get more gigs and do commercials on the side. But the company should have known better than to make it sound like Bette was selling the product. The court agreed.
Perhaps it’s just better not NOT equate Kelsy Grammer with car insurance.
