The Apple product event yesterday seemed rather lackluster and boring, but I think that it was the next step in a careful, low-key entrance into a new market: our living room. I think that in coming years, we’ll look back at this time and decide that the most important (and telling) product Apple has released at this point is:
That teeny tiny little remote, which debuted late last year with the iMac and then the iPod. I think most people — including me — looked at it as a little extra gadget that was cute, but in fact, it was the first step in the domination of our living rooms. Think about it: why would you need a remote when you’re sitting in front of your computer? You use a remote when you’re sitting on your couch.
