Well, I’ll be damned.
Here I’ve gotten used to a three hour delay for everything, and then just now I turned on the TV… and discovered that the Academy Awards™ has been on for 40 minutes, live.
I can’t really understand why this event in particular is the only thing presented live on the west coast other than a presidential address — is it because there are so many bets on it?
So, I missed the beginning. Did Jon Stewat say anything interesting? Because I don’t really care about the awards, considering that I haven’t seen a single nominated film (except for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Best Costumes nominee)…
Can I just say that while watching Lauren Bacall struggle to read the prompter, I wasn’t struck by her trouble getting the words out — I was struck by how she oozes class and beauty. I have no idea how old Lauren Bacall is, what her medical condition is, or what her mental state might be, nor do I care. This is in stark contrast to today’s Hollywood stars, into whose lives we must delve constantly. Lauren Bacall is a movie star, the real definition of the term.
I have to say, as much as I love Jon Stewart, I thought his Oscar hosting was a little flat. I did like his line that went something like “Bjork could not be here tonight. She was trying on her Oscars dress, and Dick Cheney shot her” (in reference to her swan dress at the 2001 Oscars, of course). Haha.
