I lay in bed, watching a little tv and listening to the roar and groans of the dishwasher until I started to doze off. I turned off the tv and settled in to sleep, drifting in and out, and then heard it: people talking, just outside. The dishwasher had finished its cycle, and all was quiet except for voices drifting into my room. I wondered what was going on — there have been concerns about crime lately, and just the other night a neighbor encountered someone in their backyard at 12:30am. So, I got up and peered out the window.
Nothing.
I went out to the living room, and saw nothing from there.
I wandered into the backyard, where all was silent.
It almost seemed as if the voices were coming from within the house, and went away when I moved outside.
I opened the door to my office, and the voices got louder — aha, I thought, they’re coming from outside the north gate, outside my spare bedroom.
Surprise. It was my iPod, playing through the external speaker. I have no idea how it started playing on its own, or how long it had been playing.
Perhaps this is a new feature from Apple, the iPod that decides what and when to play without interaction from the user…
