Just As I Thought

Blame it on the gay marriages

Washington Monthly asks a very pertinent question just as, once again, Republicans whip up a wedge-issue frenzy over the “protection of marriage”: What if three admitted adulterers run for president and no one cares?
Yes, the right wing is overly fond of dictating morals and trying to scapegoat gay Americans; saying that gay marriage will lead to the destruction of the sanctified covenant of marriage in this country. And what better illustration of the breakdown of morals and marriage than their very own stars?

Lurking just over the horizon are liabilities for three Republicans who have topped several national, independent polls for the GOP’s favorite 2008 nominee: Sen. John McCain (affair, divorce), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (affair, divorce, affair, divorce), and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (divorce, affair, nasty divorce). Together, they form the most maritally challenged crop of presidential hopefuls in American political history.

The piece goes on to say that the fact the press makes a non-issue of these Republican foibles demonstrates a “growing maturity in American politics.” I don’t buy that. I think that the Republicans deserve at least one tiny bit of the vitriol, slander, and hate they pile on any Democrat who doesn’t measure up to their hypocritical moral standards. Why, after all this time, the media hasn’t treated them as poorly as the Democrats I’ll never know — unless, of course, it’s because the media is owned by huge conglomerates that owe their existence and tax shelters to the Republican Party…
duh.

  • It seems to me that too many people go into marriage for all the wrong reasons — because they think it’s expected of them, because they want companionship, because it’s the politically expedient thing to do. But it seems like far too few people marry because they are both madly in love with each other.
A lesson that gay people should take note of before they rush to the altar.

  • I love it when these nimrods shout about protecting the sanctity of the institution of marriage.
Trust me (reall, trust me, I know), the institution is in shambles reguardless of who’s in it.
    Imagine, people WANTING to marry?

  • Like many others have said, Marriage is hardly taken all that seriously by most. Just look at the high rates of divorce and infidelity. If marriage is so sacred how come it’s mocked on reality TV shows? How come so many people get divorced? How come so many people cheat on their spouses? How come society doesn’t care that much? If marriage was really as sacred as some say, these issues would near non existant.

Attitudes towards marriage have changd over the years. Some people just like to hold on to the past even though it dosen’t relate to our present. Eventually they will see the light.
