Who was using the other rooms?

I’m amazed and extremely happy that Elizabeth Smart was found safely and returned to her family, an astonishing 9 months after her abduction.
I asked this question 9 months ago, and I still wonder today: the media enjoys pointing out that the Smarts live in a $1.2 million house, in an “affluent area” of Salt Lake City, with over 6,000 square feet of space. Why in the world did Elizabeth and her sister Mary Katherine share a bedroom?
