Just As I Thought

Legitimacy is in the eye of the beholder

Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday the United States does not consider legitimate the results of elections in Ukraine, which the opposition says was marred by fraud.

He challenged leaders of the former Soviet bloc nation “to decide whether they are on the side of democracy or not.”

I wonder: what would happen if some other country said the same thing about our recent election? Would it make any difference at all? What would be the consequences? I can’t really think of another country that would be able to threaten us with any sanctions that would mean anything. Perhaps Japan would stop sending us cars.

“We cannot accept this result as legitimate, because it does not meet international standards and because there has not been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse,” Powell said.

Has there been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse in the U.S. election? Just wondering.
