Just As I Thought

Let’s get shallow

I wonder if the design of computer user interfaces hasn’t reached it’s plateau? I keep seeing very strange new file browsers based on 3D space, the latest of which can be glimpsed here.

Just one glance at that daunting image, and I shirk away — the paradigm used right now in windowing UIs is simple: stacks of paper laid out in front of you. We all can relate to such a thing. But what’s the paradigm in this 3D browser? I mean, it seems to be akin to walking in a room where paper is hung from the ceiling on strings. Gee, that sounds efficient and easy to use, doesn’t it?
People keep trying to work a third dimension into computer interfaces, but I think they’re just barking up the wrong file tree.
