We all knew from the start that Dubya would be exploiting September 11th for political gain, just as he has been doing for the last couple of years — he exploited it as an excuse to invade Iraq, he exploited it as an excuse for tax cuts and huge deficits, he exploited it as an excuse to shred the Bill of Rights.
I wonder why people suddenly noticed this exploitation in a few tv ads? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they did. But what took them so long?
The latest exploitation:
Bush plans to travel Thursday to East Meadow, N.Y., for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial. Afterward he is to speak at a campaign fundraiser in the same town.
You see? Fly off somewhere in Air Force One, make a short little “presidential” visit, then follow it up with a fundraiser, conveniently putting it on the taxpayer’s bill. And in this case, he’s exploiting September 11 yet again. The question here is, will people think that his visit is a mea culpa for the ads, or a continuation of his strategy of linking September 11 to his re-election?
