Just As I Thought

Better start saving up now

The eventual release of Microsoft’s “Longhorn” operating system is getting more and more amusing. Due to arrive in about two years (by which time Apple’s OS X will probably be OS XI), it’s an amazing exercise in demos and rumor. Perhaps taking into account Moore’s Law, the axiom that governs how processing power increases, the team behind Longhorn are designing it for the computers they think might be standard by the time the product actually materializes:

Microsoft is expected to recommend that the “average” Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.
