How did I miss this?
Evidently, the lowly nickel has been redesigned — several times — and I still never got one nor saw one.
This spring, the reverse of the nickel was redesigned to feature the Indian Peace Medal. Late this year, it will feature a keelboat.
They’ll continue to change the back of the nickel through 2005 to commemorate the Lewis & Clark journey, and return to Monticello in 2006.
The 2005 designs are quite nice, and include a complete redesign of the obverse — the head — of the coin, with a new image of Jefferson that’s off center and, well, designed rather than staid and official. I hope they keep it.
The webpage states that the program began in 2003, but I don’t recall ever seeing anything different in my nickels. Have you?
