Steve Jobs declared this the Year of HD. Okay, well, those of us who have been fooling around with HD for the last 5 years welcome you to the party.
Apple has added HDV support to Final Cut Express and iMovie. Wonderful. Problem is, they skipped over one important part of the process.
You can bring HD video into the Mac, importing the MPEG-2 transport streams from cameras and digital television equipment. You can edit it. You can render it. You can watch it. You can save it to DVD in standard definition.
But you can’t put it back into MPEG-2 TS and send it back to tape. You’re stuck with it in a Quicktime format that can’t be viewed from tape, either HDV or D-VHS.
Where is the MPEG-2 HD codec we’ve been waiting years for from Apple? I’d rather not pay a third party huge wodges of cash for this last, vital step in the process.
Here I sit, still stuck with no way to get my HD stuff out of my Mac and into the real world.
