I’m certain that President Bush thought he’d get a political boost from this disaster, just as he did on September 11, 2001. But the tide has turned, and people are angry with him and the Federal government. The excuses coming from the government — that they could never have prepared for such an unimaginable happenstance — are ringing hollow, especially since FEMA years ago put this very scenario on their list of most possible disasters… just after a terrorist attack. The Bush administration and the Republican-controlled Congress have for years been cutting funding for upgrading levees.
Now, Bush has landed in Alabama on Air Force One. Where do we think he will go, dressed casually with his sleeves rolled up as per his political appearances consultant? Evidently, he’ll make aerial tours and a few carefully controlled walks on the ground. Safely out of range of the crime, the gun fire, and the cries of people who need help. He’ll make a few poorly worded speeches, then leave.
What’s the point?
