I just don’t understand — I don’t know how people don’t notice and I don’t know how he gets away with it, but here we go again: President Bush is planning to give big tax credits to yet another group of corporations that already make huge profits. This time, the casino companies, which suffered losses in Katrina.
You know, those enormous corporations that have barrels of cash, build billion-dollar hotels and casinos, and pay their employees minimum wage.
“The casinos don’t need this,” said William F. Shughart II, an economist at the University of Mississippi. “If they are [eligible], that would be a complete waste of money.”
In fact, the casino industry is trying to appeal to governments by saying it will provide jobs and tax revenue, said Alberto Lopez, director of strategic communication at Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., which lost two major casinos on the Mississippi coast. “We’re actually scratching our heads. We can’t ever remember an instance of being offered a tax credit — ever.”
It’s becoming clear to me what the Bush agenda is, but it still doesn’t make sense to me. He obviously wants to bankrupt this country, spending record amounts and yet cutting revenues everywhere and giving away tax money to corporate interests and rich CEOs. I can understand the reasoning in giving our cash away to his rich friends, but are he and his handlers so focused on today’s profits that they don’t think about what will be left — or not left — when this country goes under?
