Just As I Thought

Strumming my own guitar

I don’t ever talk about things like giving to charitable organizations here, mostly because I like people to imagine that I spend every dollar I have on things like appliances and TVs — but also because I just think it is kind of tacky to do so. Suffice it to say that some chunks of my money from selling the house have been going to good causes.
I bring this up because of the juxtaposition of Wendie Jo Sperber’s death and the shipment that is making a journey to me from Texas right now.

The Susan B. Komen Foundation in Austin held an auction of two guitars, both painted by “Women in Rock”. I won the auction for one of the guitars, which was painted by my friend Sara and Kacy Crowley, among others. At first, the auction went on for only a week, and I was asked to promote it on Sara’s websites. I did, and I went ahead and made the first bid, hoping that once Clear Channel radio started promoting it on the air, the bids would skyrocket. But when the auction ended, I was the only bid.
I asked Clear Channel to put it back up to bid, and happily, they did — giving it two weeks this time. Again, I made the first bid, crossing my fingers for a huge offer to benefit Komen.
The auction ended on the 20th, with no further bids. In fact, the second guitar got no bids.
I’m not sure what happened. Did Clear Channel not promote the auction? Were people just unable to bid after opening their wallets for disasters here and abroad?
Whatever the reason, I am now the owner of a one-of-a-kind Gibson Les Paul guitar that I have no idea how to play. It will find a home here in San Jose, and the Komen Foundation will have a check from me to continue their important work.
Now, I wonder where I can get guitar lessons?
