As I watch today’s news about the corruption surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff, I begin to wonder if anyone is keeping count of the serious scandals taking place during the Bush administration, involving the White House or Congress.
There are so many Republicans who can only respond by jumping up and down and screaming “CLINTON!” at the top of their lungs; but it seems to me that during the Clinton years there weren’t that many real scandals. Rather, the scandals such as Whitewater were not real scandals but were manufactured by the conservatives. The main scandal which was real, but elevated by the Republicans far above the attention it deserved, was Clinton’s affair — which the Republicans should have learned from. It’s the little lie that gets you in the end.
Maybe it’s my rose-colored glasses looking back at the Clinton White House, but doesn’t it seem like there was far less scandal back then?
The most damning thing here is that the conservatives were the ones who swept in claiming that the Clinton White House was rife with scandal and corruption, and that they were going to change the tone. Surprise!
