Just As I Thought

How to win a war: make them hate you

Look, the Iraq fiasco is now a big success! Now this is a world-class example of spin. In the midst of Iraqi protests against America, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe touted the protests as a sign of success in Iraq:

“Iraq, four years on, is now a place where people can freely gather and express their opinions, and that was something they could not do under Saddam.”

  • Bull, Kirk. Since when did an anti-US demonstration in a middle eastern country indicate “freedom” and “democracy?” By that logic, the huge “celebrations” in North Korea where tens of thousands of people “spontaneously” praise the Great Leader are evidence of their open society where people can gather to voice their opinions any time.

  • What he said was “… place where people can freely gather and express their opinions, and that was something they could not do under Saddam.” which may not apply to this situation, but is (sorta) true.
Uless of course you’re a woman, or poor……..

  • Certainly, the freedom to gather and express opinions is one hallmark of a free country… but that’s not what he said. The operative part of the quote is at the beginning, where he says “Iraq, four years on, is now a place where…” He wasn’t describing the requirements for a successful democracy, he was claiming that Iraq WAS one.
I almost expect the White House to claim that the blowing up of cars and markets is a sign of a free, democratic country where citizens are free to express themselves through high explosives… oh, and this was something they couldn’t do when Saddam was in power.
