There’s something disappointing in seeing a transcript of a candidate’s speech before he even makes it delivers it. As John Edwards speaks right now, seemingly off the cuff, I’m reading his prepared speech on the Washington Post website, complete with such ad libs as “Thank you. Now, you know why Elizabeth is so amazing.” I’m reading along as he delivers it, word for word. (Spoke too soon — he’s paraphrasing here and there and embellishing a bit as he reads.)
These guys are really good public speakers — they make what’s on the prompter seem as if they’re ad libbing.
Oh, the tag line for the end of tonight’s speech, before he’s used it: “Hope is on the way.”
