Ever since March, I’ve been watching the long-awaited return of Dr. Who on the BBC (via the internet, as no station here in the U.S. has picked it up — typical short-sightedness, as it’s become one of the top-rated shows in Britain, by the time we get it here the hype will be over).
Anyway, it’s really a great show, both because it’s the same… and different. For instance, it treads in places the original series would never go, touching on such subjects as what happens when a companion changes the timelines; and as of the last few episodes, lots of bisexual badinage with the new and sexy companion Jack.
Tomorrow begins the last 2 episodes of the season, which once again feature the newly re-envisioned and more scary Daleks. Early in the season, the new Dalek finally showed why they are feared… and also showed why they should be pitied. Great writing, thank goodness.
Anyway, this whole entry was spurred by reading this news article this morning:
Dalek ‘kidnappers’ demand Doctor
“Kidnappers” who stole a Dalek from a Somerset tourist attraction have sent its owners a ransom note – and the alien’s amputated plunger. The 5ft model, believed to be an original from the cult BBC Dr Who series, was taken from Wookey Hole Caves near Wells on Monday.
On Thursday, staff found the plunger arm and a ransom note on a doorstep.
The note read: “We are holding the Dalek captive. We demand further instructions from the Doctor.”
The group, signing themselves Guardians of the Planet Earth, added: “For the safety of the human race we have disarmed and removed its destructive mechanism.”
Does anyone else find it ironic that they were found in ‘the Wookey Hole Caves near Wells?’
The spelling might be different, but I refuse to speculate that Chewbacca had anything to do with this.
